Team captain Chris Cuarto said that RP’s No. 2 Huey will face the host’s No. 1 Martin Sayer in the opening match while veteran Mamiit, the Philippines’ No.1 will take on Hong Kong’s No. 2 Yu Hiu Tung. Cuarto said that he had paired Mamiit and Huey to hopefully clinch the tie by winning the doubles on Saturday. He noted that except for Sayer all the other Hong Kong players were locally ranked but that “didn’t mean we are saying they are not good. Besides, we are playing in Hong Kong. But we will try our best to win the two matches.” He said Mamiit and Huey “are in good shape and ready for tomorrow.” However, he was concerned about the weather in Hong Kong, where it has been raining for the past three days. He said the players couldn’t get much practice on the hardcourt and had to settle for exercising in the gym. Huey is a former All-American from the University of Virginia who at one time was ranked as high as No. 6 in singles and No.1 in doubles in NCAA Division I. In the 2006 Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Championships Huey overcame Sayer who played for Radford in a gripping quarter finals match 6-3/6-7/7-6. During his college career, Huey had several impressive wins in singles over players like Alex Slovic of Washington, Bryan Koniecko of Ohio State and Andre Begemann of Pepperdine among others. The 32-year-old Mamiit at one time reached a career best of 72 in singles in the world rankings and 102 in doubles and has had big wins against Michael Chang, Andre Agassi, Todd Martin, Mark Woodforde and Jason Stoltenberg. Mamiit, who played his only year of collegiate tennis at USC, won the NCAA singles title as a freshman, becoming the first player to do so since John McEnroe in 1978 and was also named Collegiate Player of the Year. Mamiit then returned to the Philippines and with another Fil-Am, lefty Eric Taino, helped RP advance all the way to Group I of the zone. Mamiit is currently ranked 426 in singles and 911 in doubles. |
