Erica TottenFil-Am swimmer Erica Totten made big waves over the weekend when she shattered four national marks at the Austin Grand Prix ’09 competition in the US.

Totten, an RP team member on scholarship at the University of Arkansas under coach Jeff Poppel, broke Akiko Thomson’s 16-year-old RP mark in the 200-meter individual medley with a new time of 2:23.59. Thomson previously held the record with 2:24.19, which she set at the 1993 Southeast Asian Games.

Totten also pulled off record-breaking feats in the 400m IM, 400-m freestyle, and 800-m freestyle.

A veteran of the 2006 Doha Asian Games and 2007 Melbourne World Swimming Championships, Totten shaved four seconds off her own RP record (5:05.43) when she clocked 5:01.10 in the 400m IM.

She then bested her old 4:23.68 mark with a 4:20.90 performance in the 400m free and capped an excellent weekend by eclipsing by a good 11 seconds Janet Evans’ old Philippine record (9:10.26) with her 8:59.19.
