Jerick Ternida, a pro bodybuilder, just became the first Filipino ever to win the overall championship of the Musclemania Universe competition.
Ternida, described as the Pinoy Arnold Schwarzenegger, is a six-time Mr. Philippines and also a middleweight competitor of the Musclemania competition in Miami, Florida.
He described his triumph as "overwhelming", having to hurdle obstacles before being heralded as the overall champion.
"It's overwhelming. I trained hard for six months and also coming off an injury. Despite the injury, I won this prestigious competition," he said.
The 37-year-old Jerick thought his bodybuilding career has ended when he suffered an injury last year.
He suffered a bicep injury after deadlifting 600 pounds. His wrist strap tore off, accidentally stretching his left arm.
"I thought it was over," he said.
After recovering from the injury, Jerick went back to gym and started training "smartly."
"Now I train smarter. I just contract the muscle more. Before when I did heavyweights, I used momentum. But now I'm contracting the muscle. So the injury was really a blessing," he said.
Through discipline and dogged determination, he was able to mold his body to get the judges’ nod and win the championship.
Jerick said even when he grows old he’ll continue competing in international meets to represent the Philippines.
