TARLAC PROVINCE , Philippines – A former high school dropout and a daughter of a rice farmer took the opening day spotlight as they captured the first two gold medals in yesterday’s start of the Palarong Pambansa at the Tarlac Recreational Park in San Jose town here.
Cebu pride Ivan Castaneda, who stopped schooling for three years due to poverty until he had saved enough money as a catering service waiter, ruled the secondary boys long jump event with a 6.82-meter effort to start Central Visayas’ bid for a crack at the overall championship.
Ilocos Region’s Stephanie Cimatu, who lived in a farming town in Bangui, Ilocos Norte known mainly for its 15 towering electric-generating wind turbines fronting the seashore, actually copped the first gold when she topped the secondary girls’ javelin gold with a 38.90m throw.
Cotabato Region’s John Albert Mantua, meanwhile, booked the secondary shot put gold for the second straight year with an 11.58m throw, improving the 10.99m effort he posted in last year’s edition in Tacloban City.
However, the 16-year-old Cimatu, coached by former national team member Erlinda Lavandia and a product of former Gintong Alay head and Ilocos Norte Gov. Michael Keon, fell 10cm short of the 22-year-old mark of 39m by Western Visayas’ Melva Quirino.
Still, the victory more than made for her silver medal finish (36.41m) in the Asian Youth Games in Singapore last year.
“I’m happy I won a medal again,” said Cimatu, who also won in last year’s Palaro in Tacloban (36.64m), in Filipino.

MANILA, Philippines – It was the first time for defending World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao to fight in a massive venue on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Fighting at the $1.2-billion Cowboys Stadium proved to be fruitful for Pacquiao as he was able to defend his title against Joshua Clottey of Ghana via unanimous decision with the scores 120-108, 119-109 and 119-109.
“Grabe dahil alam mo na-surprise ako sa tibay ni Joshua Clottey,” Pacquiao told ABS-CBN Correspondent Dyan Castillejo.
“Pero noong pagpasok ko pa lang sa ring, nakita ko ang mga fans lalo akong naganahan. Dahil sabi ko first time in my life, in my boxing career, na ako ang main event na ganito karami ang mga tao. I have to show my best na mapasaya ko iyong mga tao,” he said of the more than 50,000 spectators at the Cowboys Stadium.
Pacquiao, who was in the locker room when he was interviewed by Castillejo, added that Clottey was a tough nut to crack. The Ghanaian refused to go down so Pacquiao kept the heat on.

MANILA, Philippines - They stood out in a field long dominated by men. And for their exploits in the SEA Games and the World Championships, five courageous ladies will share the spotlight as 2009 Athletes of the Year during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Awards Night on March 1 at the Manila Hotel.
Pool whiz Rubilen Amit, long jump queen Marestella Torres and the charming poomsae team of Rani Ann Ortega, Camille Alarilla and Janice Lagman came through with victories that easily warmed the hearts and brought significant joy to a country of 90 million people.
Sharing the stage with them on this big night that gathers the top sport achievers for the year 2009 is boxing superstar and top pound-for-pound fighter Manny Pacquiao, who had been earlier named as the PSA Athlete of the Decade.
Since it began compiling its list of Athlete of the Year winners in 1981, this marked only the first time that an all-female selection has been given the highest honor by the country’s sportswriting fraternity.
None among the five has also been bestowed the rare distinction of being Athlete of the Year during previous stagings of the event presented by Smart, Pacific Online System Corp. and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

ANTIPOLO CITY, Philippines—If the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings say that the Smart-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Cup tournament belongs to them, it is only because nothing suggests otherwise.
Starting point guard Jay-Jay Helterbrand and import Chris Alexander on Friday night walked away with the tournament’s biggest individual accolades just minutes before the Gin Kings were to gun for a 2-0 lead against Air21 in their title series at the Ynares Center here.
