Smart Gilas faces Egypt 5 in quarterfinal

MANILA, Philippines - DUBAI – Smart Gilas Pilipinas takes on an Al Jazeera of Egypt Wednesday, vowing to play aggressive against an untested team in the quarterfinal round of the 21st Dubai Invitational at the Al Ahli Indoor Stadium here.

“I don’t know exactly about African basketball, I really don’t have any idea,” said Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman. “This is the first time I saw a team from Egypt, this is the first time, I just really don’t know anything about African basketball.”

Smart Gilas finished second in Group B with a 3-1 (win-loss) record, losing only to Al Jalaa of Syria, which swept its four games, to set up a crossover quarterfinal showdown with Al Jazeera, third in Group A with a 2-2 slate.

 
Filipino athletes in high spirits as Asian Youth Games 2009 open

Asian Youth Games 2009 open in SingaporeMANILA, Philippines - The Philippine competitors in the first Asian Youth Games are ready for action in the multi-event sports tournament which opens Monday in Singapore.

“Our athletes are in high spirits and they are raring to compete," said Philippine Chief of Mission Col. Cesar Binag, who is also the president of the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines.

There are 59 Filipino athletes competing in Singapore, including 18 football players who are now back in the country after playing a Singapore selection to a 2-2 tie at the Jalan Besar Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Event organizers were forced to quarantine the RP soccer team after one player tested positive for Influenza A(H1N1). Like Hong Kong, whose three members of the soccer were found to have the flu, the Philippines was removed from the official list of participants.

Despite this, the remaining members of the Philippine delegation are ready to compete in athletics, aquatics (diving and swimming), basketball 3-on-3, beach volleyball, bowling, shooting and table tennis.

 
Padyak Pinoy champions tour speeds off May 8

The eight-day “Padyak PinoyMANILA, Philippines – Following the successful staging of the 2009 Tour of Luzon’s revival, another bicycle road race hits the road on May 8 to 15.

The eight-day “Padyak Pinoy" race, another multi-stage bikefest speeds off with The Fort in Taguig City as the starting point.

The race, also known as the “Tour of Champions", will have 15 squads composed of five riders each that will vie for the team top honors.

The division of the riders was deliberately designed to allow team members better coordination and more effective teamwork among themselves.

 
5,000 runners compete in Condura run

The second Condura Run fires off Sunday at the Bonifacio Global City with over 5,000 runners participating.

The event, organized by Concepcion Durables Inc. and held in partnership with SkyWay, Vitwater, Nike, Canon, Jollibee, Cebu Pacific, and the Bonifacio Development Corporation, aims to help raise funds for the preservation and protection of the whale sharks of Donsol in Sorsogon.

Raul Concepcion, chief executive officer, Concepcion Industries Inc., Anthony Concepcion, president and chief operating officer, Concepcion Durables Inc., and Patrick Concepcion, vice president - service, Concepcion Industries, Inc. are set to fire the starting gun at 5:30 a.m. for the 21K half marathon followed by the 10K challenge run at 6 a.m., 5K discovery run at 6:05 a.m. and the 3K fun run at 6:10 a.m.
