MANILA, Philippines - Pool legend Efren “Bata” Reyes got back at Jeffrey de Luna, 11-2, in the finals to clinch the lone berth in the Asian Games 8-ball event in the Asiad qualifiers at the Rizal Memorial Billiards Center in Malate recently.
The former world champion, who lost to De Luna in the third round, fought back from the losers’ bracket to get a crack at the Asiad slot, dominating De Luna in their rematch with a near-flawless game.
He went ahead, 6-1, in the finals behind his trademark shots, including a four-rack break-and-runout en route to the victory.
“My four run-outs were a big factor that’s why I was able to build a big lead early on,” said Reyes, who will also see action in the English Billiards competition in the Asian Games set in November in Guangzhou, China.
“Hopefully, we can perform well in the Asian Games and bring honor to the country again,” said Reyes.

MANILA, Philippines - Talk n Text and Coca-Cola dispute solo second today while B-Meg Derby Ace hopes to check a two-game slide against slumping Barako Energy Coffee in the PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Llamados and the Coffee Masters battle at 5 p.m. then the Tropang Texters and the Tigers clash at 7:30 p.m. in the final play date before the tourney takes a break for the annual PBA All-Star event in Puerto Princesa, Palawan starting Friday.
Barako will be playing without import Sammy Monroe who was suspended for one game and fined P20,000 for his flagrant foul on Mark Yee in their game versus Talk n Text last Friday.
“We need intensity on defense plus improvement on offense. Minus Monroe, the locals must show up,” said Barako coach Junel Baculi.
The Coffee Masters have lost their last five games after winning their opening game against the Sta. Lucia Realtors.

MANILA, Philippines - San Miguel Beer started strong and finished even stronger as it walloped Barako Energy Coffee, 106-82, to gain a piece of the lead in the PBA Fiesta Conference at the Astrodome last night.
The Beermen seized control early behind the exploits of Dondon Hontiveros and Alex Cabagnot and finished pulling away on the sterling efforts of Dorian Peña, Jay Washington and Olsen Racela.
Import Gabe Freeman drew tremendous support from his local teammates as the Beermen tied the Coca-Cola Tigers for the lead with 3-1 win-loss cards.
Hontiveros went 4-of-4 from the field in the opening quarter and finished with a team-high 20 points on top of four rebounds and one assist.
Freeman put in 17 points, 13 rebounds, two steals and two shot blocks with Washington, Cabagnot and Peña adding at least 11 points each for the Beermen who made it 3-0 over the Energy Food and Drinks franchise this season.
The Coffee Masters reeled to their fourth straight loss after winning their first game in the reinforced tourney against the Sta. Lucia Realtors.
Meanwhile, Rain or Shine and Barangay Ginebra clash today in the second leg of the Phoenix Fuel PBA on Tour in Victorias, Negros Occidental.

MANCHESTER - David Haye is on a relentless mission to box one of the Klitschko brothers in a world heavyweight title unification bout, but in the meantime he has not overlooked the threat of Saturday’s experienced opponent John Ruiz.
The World Boxing Association (WBA) champion, boxing's unofficial king of trash-talk, faces American Ruiz in his first defence after out-pointing Russian giant Nikolay Valuev for the belt in November.
Haye-Ruiz is the first world heavyweight title bout to be held in Britain for nearly ten years, since Lennox Lewis beat South African Francois Botha, and will be watched by a sell-out crowd of 19,000 at the MEN Arena in Manchester.
The heavyweight division has been described as going through a fallow period yet the big live gate that will see Haye-Ruiz follows the 50,000 fans that paid to see Wladimir Klitschko against American Eddie Chambers at the ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany, last month.
WBC champion Vitali Klitschko, 38, defends his title against Poland’s Albert Sosnowski on May 29 while IBF-WBO titles-holder Wladimir, 33, looks likely to next fight Alexander Povetkin, of Russia, in September.
