TO the shoulders of Franz Pumaren now lies the task of reclaiming the lost glory in Philippine youth basketball. Yesterday, the multi-titled collegiate coach left for Tehran, Iran, along with his dirty dozen that will face stiff competition in the Fiba Asian Youth Championship slated Aug. 28 to Sept. 5. It has been nearly three decades since the Philippines last won an Asian youth title with American coach Ron Jacobs then calling the shots for the National. Pumaren was a member of that squad that also has several young talented players like Hector Calma and the late Alfie Almario. |

Singapore—Armed with probably the best team assembled in years, Team Philippines could finally end a 12-year drought and reign supreme again in the Southeast Asian Amateur Golf Team Championship, more known as the Putra Cup, which tees off today at the Singapore Island Country Club here. National Golf Association of the Philippines secretary general Jun Galindez and director Pablo Soon are optimistic that with Rufino Bayron, Ferdinand Aunzo, Tonlits Asistio and Jhonel Ababa, the country is a shoo-in for a record 17th team title in the event’s rich 48-year history. |

The short walk from the Philippine ambassador’s office to the labor attaché’s office was pure agony, even if it was only a few meters away. The Sta. Lucia Realtors, 2007-2008 PBA All-Filipino champion, had paid a courtesy call on Philippine Ambassador to Bahrain Ed Maglaya then proceeded to the office next door where about 60 runaway OFWs were being sheltered. Ambassador Maglaya said the OFWs, all female, usually get into trouble because they enter the country illegally. Consequently they are stranded. The visiting Realtors were there to cheer them up and give away phone cards so they could call their families back home. |
