Pitcher Julie Marie Muyco struck out 11 batters in the first four innings and drove in four runs as the team from Bacolod City raised its record to 2-1 for second place in Group A. The Filipinos, the Asia-Pacific representatives in the weeklong tournament, also defeated Germany, 3-1, Tuesday, after yielding to powerhouse US-Central, 1-10, in their first game. US-Central, bannered by Indiana, stayed undefeated in three games after a 16-1 demolition of Germany. Muyco, starting in the place of Annalie Benjamin, who is expected to join the team on Friday, also made a good account of herself at bat, going 3 for 4 and scoring twice. Catcher Elvie Entrina also went 2 for 4, her double sending home Cindy Carol Banay and Jenalyn Polinario in a four-run binge that virtually sealed the win in the fourth inning. The RP team, composed of veterans from the 2004 and 2005 Little League World Series teams that finished third twice, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a single from Muyco that allowed Banay and Angelique Benjamin to reach home. A victory on Friday against US-Southwest, represented by West Mesa LL of Albuquerque, New Mexico, will assure the Filipinos of a semifinal spot against either US-West or Latin America. Meanwhile, another Bacolod team leaves for Portland, Oregon Wednesday night to see action in the Major League girls’ 11-12 division of the World Series. The team, whose campaign is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, will have only nine players for their entire campaign unless two other key players get their US visas in time for the tournament that will run until Aug. 13. The Bacolod softbelles could also forfeit their first match against Europe if they fail to arrive for their first match scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (Friday morning in the Philippines). |
