Filipino booters finally lived up to their “Miracle Team" billing with a huge 6-2 upset of Brazil no less last Thursday in the Deloitte Street Child World Cup indoor football tournament in Durban, South Africa.

Shrugging off a 2-0 loss to Tanzania two days ago, the Jess Landangan-coached RP squad worked like a well-oiled machine, surging to a 4-1 halftime lead before scoring two more goals in the next period to wrap up the monumental win in front of a roaring South African gallery.

It marked the first time that the Philippines beat world football power Brazil at the international level and boosted the charges of British co-manager Craig Burrows into the shield competition after finishing the Group B preliminaries with a 1-2 win-loss slate.

“We prayed for a breakthrough for the RP ‘Miracle Team,’ and it was answered in a big way with this win over the Brazilians," said co-manager Ed Formoso.

Formoso also cited the Henry V. Moran Foundation, which staged the tryouts that led to the formation of a competitive squad to the South African soccerfest.

RP football team in Singapore plays aloneMANILA, Philippines - Traveling to Singapore to compete against 12 other nations at the 1st Asian Youth Games, the Filipino national youth football team now find themselves playing alone after one of the players was found to have A(H1N1).

The team of 17 players, two coaches and one therapist has been quarantined at a resort in Loyang since Friday in accordance with the AYG’s A(H1N1) contingency plans.

“The kids are raring to play," the Philippine team’s deputy chief of mission and Philippine Football Federation president Mari Martinez told GMANews.TV in a phone interview from Singapore. To stay sharp, the adolescent boys have been working out in isolation.

“It’s frustrating for the athletes, matagal nilang pinaghandaan ito but it’s beyond our control now. We have to accept that this can happen to anyone," said Philippine Olympic Committee spokesman Joey Romasanta, who monitors the situation from Singapore.

The squad was placed in quarantine – with no visitors allowed, including the players' parents - after one of its players, a 14-year-old boy, tested positive for the pandemic virus. Their scheduled games against Chinese Taipei (June 20) and Iran (June 24) were postponed until further notice.

Crisis hits RP women's futsal team, PFF Another dispute within the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has erupted following the removal of the national women’s futsal (indoor football) coach and the mass resignation of the team members.

“We’re looking for a tribunal where we can explain our side, but unfortunately the Philippine Football Federation doesn’t have one,” said national women's futsal coach Emmanuel Batungbacal during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue Branch.

Batungbacal, who steered the women’s futsal squad to a surprising bronze medal finish in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games, was sacked for sending the team to an international competition in New Zealand without the PFF’s sanction.
