Jerwin Gaco led Harbour Centre’s second half surge as the history-seeking Batang Pier zoomed to an easy 85-62 win over Hapee in Game 1 of their best-of-five semifinal series in the 2009 PBL PG-Flex Linoleum Cup at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.Gaco, aside from scoring 15 points, led Harbour’s defensive stand where they limited Hapee to 12 points in the third quarter. He also grabbed 15 rebounds. Holding on to a 43-33 halftime lead, Harbour ripped apart the Hapee defense using a 15-5 scoring exchange then scored 26 more in the fourth to snuff the fight out of the Complete Protectors. “We wanted to play hard from the start since I thought that by second half they would be tired because Hapee already played four straight games," said Harbour Centre coach Jorge Gallent. Aside from Gaco, center Rico Maierhofer netted 13 points and 12 rebounds while Reed Juntilla led all scorers with 19 markers. Al Vergara’s return also worked wonders for Harbour as the veteran guard’s court leadership – issuing eight assists – translated into 16 fastbreak points for the Batang Pier. Vergara saw action for the Singapore Slingers and arrived last Tuesday in time for the series opener. He only scored seven points but shadowed collegiate star Chris Tiu all game long. Games Saturday (Ynares Sports Center) 2:00 p.m. – Bacchus vs Magnolia 4:00 p.m. – Hapee vs Harbour |
