Chris Tiu and Josh Vanlandingham made the free throws that mattered in the final 11.5 seconds, towing Hapee Toothpaste past Pharex, 84-81, Tuesday in the PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.

Tiu’s freebies gave the Complete Protectors an 82-78 cushion while Vanlandingham sealed the count with two more free throws after Sean Co drained a booming triple to cut the deficit to one.

Hapee now advances to the semifinals where it will face Harbour Centre. The Batang Pier, by finishing first in the elimination round, earned the right to pick a semifinal opponent and went for the Complete Protectors.

Tiu’s offensive output in his Hapee debut was hardly impressive—the former Ateneo de Manila University star finished with just seven points—but he nevertheless made his presence felt, according to coach Gee Abanilla.

“Not to take away anything from my other players but Chris gave us a big help,” said Abanilla. “He displayed high basketball IQ, very smart player.”

Tiu—sporting a jersey at least two sizes bigger—cranked up Hapee’s transition game and showed no trace that he only had a single practice day with his teammates.

The hardcourt/show biz hotshot also added four rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes of action.

Jervy Cruz bucked an early foul trouble to wind up with 19 points 10 rebounds, one steal and one block and redeem himself after a dismal game last Saturday.

“We realized that they (Pharex) put us in trouble when their big guys play aggressively,” said Abanilla. “That’s why I told my guys to assert themselves especially underneath.”

Vanlandingham hit back-to-back three-pointers just when Pharex was mounting an uprising early in the fourth for a 72-63 lead. But the Generix kept fighting through Co, Don Villamin and Fil-am Chris Ross to stay close.

The scores:

HAPEE 84—Cruz 19, Daa 13, Convento 11, Hugnatan 9, Viray 9, Vanlandingham 8, Tiu 7, Morial 4, Grijaldo 2, Saguindel 2, Espiritu 0.

PHAREX 81—Co 15, Villamin 13, Ross 12, Gerilla 12, Allera 6, Espiritu 6, Matias 6, Saladaga 4, Ebuen 2, Melegrito 2, Bauzon 2, Aguilar 0.

Quarters: 29-22, 45-38, 64-63, 84-81
