Chris Ross sparked Pharex’s endgame comeback as the Generix earned the last quarterfinals ticket via a 71-69 win over Toyota Otis in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) PG Flex Linoleum Cup at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Sports and Cultural Center.Ross, from an isolation play against fellow Fil-Am Chris Timberlake at midcourt, scored the pivotal basket with 4.1 ticks left in the game clock. Challenging Timberlake’s defense, Ross drove past his defender then finished with a sidestep jump shot from the left elbow to put the brakes’ on Toyota’s quarterfinal bid. “Tough games bring out the best player," said winning coach Carlo Tan. “(Ross) stood out in offense and defense today." Ross showed Pharex made the right choice when the Jappy Pascual-owned squad made him the first draft pick this season finishing with 23 points on a 10-of-16 shooting from the field. He also grabbed 10 rebounds, issued seven assists, had two steals and blocked one shot in 37 minutes of action on the floor. Ian Saladaga scored eight of his 15 points in the final period to go with his seven rebounds. Ronnie Matias and Fritz Bauzon had 10 points apiece with the former also collecting 10 rebounds, two assists, a steal and blocked two shots. “It is a tough way for Toyota to lose when two teams slug it out like this. We could have done better in offense. Some of them (players) are really tired," Tan said. Erick Rodriguez had 16 points, 13 rebounds and a shot block for the Sparks while James Mangahas had 12 markers and John Wilson came through with 11 along with seven rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two shot blocks. Toyota’s campaign ended on a dud after being touted as one of the team’s to beat in the season-opening conference. The Generix would take a one day rest before facing Hapee at 4:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals that starts Saturday at the Guadalupe Viejo Sports Complex in Makati. The other quarterfinal pairing is Bacchus versus Burger King at 2:00 p.m. Hapee and Bacchus enjoy a twice to beat advantage in their respective series. |
