Aces eye 3-0 lead; SMB, TNT break tie

Both Siot Tanquingcen and Tim Cone got what they want. Cone, however, is the one who finds himself in a better position.

The grand slam Alaska mentor watched his team hold off Sta. Lucia to hammer out a 94-87 victory that gave the Aces a 2-0 lead over the Realtors in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup late Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

San Miguel Beer pocketed a 112-103 triumph earlier that day, but all Tanquingcen and the Beermen managed to do was avoid a 0-2 hole against Talk ‘N Text and square their half of the semifinal duels at 1-1.

“We really wanted to grab the momentum here,” Cone said after the victory. “Last time we played Sta. Lucia (in a series) they came back so strong and really beat us up with really hard play. We didn’t know how to handle it.”

Cone was referring to last year’s semifinals, where the Realtors reversed a Game 1 defeat with back-to-back wins and eventually took the series, 4-3. Sta. Lucia also went on to bag their only All-Filipino title thus far against Purefoods.

“I thought we handled it a lot better this time,” said Cone. “We tried to move harder. That’s the key for us against Sta. Lucia, play at their level of intensity.”

The Aces go for a historically insurmountable 3-0 lead when they take on the Realtors today at 4 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum while the Beermen and the Tropang Texters break their tie at 6:30 p.m.

With both teams dominating each other in the first two games of the series, things are expected to be a lot tighter in this crucial tie-breaker and Tanquingcen hopes that his squad—led by Dondon Hontiveros, Danny Seigle, Olsen Racela and rookie Bonbon Custodio—will get the job done against the Mac Cardona-led Texters.

“Expect a tough series,” Tanquingcen said. The Beermen hope to suit up Lordy Tugade tonight. San Miguel rested the sweet-shooting guard, who has been playing with tendonitis in his left knee.
