Champ Sta. Lucia tries to get out of 0-2 hole

Despite facing a 0-2 deficit, Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez says the Realtors’ KFC Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinals series against Alaska is not yet over.

“We’re down by two in the series and Alaska needs to win two more games to dethrone us," said Fernandez minutes after the reigning Philippine Cup champions’ 94-87 loss against Alaska Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Game 3 of their semis match up will be at the Araneta Coliseum at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday with the Aces hoping to move one game away of clinching a finals berth and avenge their setback against the same squad in last season’s All-Filipino Cup tournament.

Sta. Lucia won that series, 4-3, to enter the finals and face Purefoods for the All-Filipino crown, which the Realtors won in another seven grueling games.

But that was last year and the Aces seemed to learn a lot from that best-of-seven affair with the Realtors.

“We don’t want a repeat of last year’s semifinals where (Sta. Lucia) tied the series to gain the momentum. As much as possible we don’t want to be complacent until the series is over," said two-time most valuable player winner Willie Miller.

Alaska, despite falling behind in the first half in both games, pushed the right buttons in the last two quarters and played more aggressively to twice frustrate back-to-back seeking Sta. Lucia.

Defense also helped Alaska gain control in the series and even limited Sta. Lucia to a 28-of-78 field goal shooting in a 92-76 Game 1 win.

Sta. Lucia shot much better in Game 2, 34-for-69, but still could not find the knockout punch to finish Alaska and gain the win that would have tied the series.

“I have to tell my players that we need to keep fighting. This series is not yet over," said Fernandez.

San Miguel, meanwhile, tries to gain the lead in its series against Talk ‘N Text in the 6:30 p.m. second game.

Flattened by the Tropang Texters in Game 1, 129-100, the Beermen rebounded big time with a 112-103 victory to tie the series.
