Air21 blasted Ginebra, 124-90 to tie the best-of-seven championship showdown at 1-1 in Game 2 of the Smart-Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City. The Express played as if they were not newcomers in the big stage against the hottest ball club, leading from start to finish and embarrassing a Ginebra squad that saw an end to its 13-game winning streak dating back to the elimination round. Air21, a team that was regarded as doomed even before the series began, led by as many as 35 points (117-82) in the surprisingly one-sided contest where Jayjay Helterbrand, named Best Player of the Conference earlier, was unable to finish after suffering a hamstring injury in the third quarter. Helterbrand only had four points and Best Import awardee Chris Alexander had 10. Mark Caguioa himself wasn’t a big factor after getting into early foul trouble. He had four fouls with still 1:02 left before halftime and by the time he was fielded back, the Express were well headed to tying the series. Arwind Santos and Gary David each scored 20 points for the Express, who indeed were a different team as what coach Bo Perasol promised after their Game 1 loss, 105-96. Air21 was a totally solid team this time, responding magnificently to every Ginebra rally with clutch hits and dominating the boards, the aspect of the game the Express failed to check in the series opener. The Express took a 26-18 lead after the first period, stretched it to 58-45 by the half, then scored the first 14 points of the third quarter to set up the massacre, 72-45. – GMANews.TV |
