Apparently, it would take no less than the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president himself to get Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) officials to sit down with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and end their differences.During a chance meeting over the weekend at the Olympic Council of Asia conference in Kuwait, IOC president Jacques Rogge personally instructed POC president Jose “Peping" Cojuangco, Jr. to mend fences with the government sports agency or face the possibility of suspension as what befell other troubled Olympic bodies like that of Iraq. “He (Rogge) mentioned that we have a similar problem with Iraq and three other countries which were later suspended. He was supportive of the POC but does not want to see the country being suspended so he advised us to try to mend fences with the government but at the same time protect our autonomy," Cojuangco reported during Tuesday’s PSA Forum. The POC has been at loggerheads with the PSC over certain policies on recruitment and training of athletes. The POC executive board has even signed a resolution calling for the ouster of PSC chairman Harry Angping for his supposed discrimination against Fil-foreign athletes and the creation of Task Force Aquatics, which they deemed as government intervention and encroachment on their authority. Angping has later explained his side in a meeting with IOC representative to the Philippines Frank Elizalde, which according to the PSC chair, produced positive results. With the IOC directive, Cojuangco admitted that he has no choice but to turn his back on the POC’s earlier decision to sever ties with Angping and set a meeting with the PSC chairman soon. “We have no options. He and Elizalde have already met and talked and that was the start. I’m confident that we’ll also get there and possibly the meeting will happen before the end of this month. But there must be an agenda so our talks will produce good results," added Cojuangco. |
