UAAP fetes year’s bestThe University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) closes its 71st season with a fitting awarding of the coveted Athlete of the Year on Thursday at the University of the Philippines’ Bahay ng Alumni.

The Athlete of the Year will be chosen from among the Most Valuable Player (MVP) awardees in the 15 sports played this season.

Among the frontrunners for the top accolade are chesser John Paul Gomez and tennis ace PJ Tierro of La Salle and trackster Ben Alejandrino of University of Santo Tomas – all of whom gave honor to the country when they competed in international competitions.

Gomez, a five-time winner of the AOY, earned a grandmaster norm during the Dresden Chess Olympiad last year while schoolmate Tierro was part of the RP team that defeated Hong Kong in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone II recently in Hong Kong. For his part, Alejandrino bagged a gold medal for Team UAAP-Philippines at the ASEAN University Games last December in Kuala Lumpur.

Also in contention are basketball star Rabeh Al-Hussaini of Ateneo, two-time Athlete of the Year swimmer Luica Dacanay of UP and another swimmer Enchong Dee of La Salle.

In the juniors division, spiker Alyssa Valdez of UST, a veteran of the 7th Asian Youth Girls Volleyball Tournament, is considered a lock for the prestigious AOY.

Valdez’s alma mater UST will also bask in glory during the ceremonies as it formally receives the UAAP's general championship for both the seniors and juniors divisions.

The Espana-based Tigers ran away with their 11th straight seniors overall title – 36th all in all - with a winning 333-point total built on nine titles.

Not to be outdone are the Tiger Cubs, who topped the juniors play with 99 points.
