The Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) led by its chairman and chief executive officer Efraim Genuino, has agreed to be the major sponsor of the Feb. 20 two-hour rite, when the country’s oldest media organization honors the Filipino athletes who did the country proud in 2008. For several years now, Pagcor has been remitting part of its gross to the Philippine Sports Commission to sustain the country’s sports development program. It also is a regular partner of the PSA as one of its sponsors during its weekly Forum. “In behalf of the officers and members of the PSA, we’re extending our heartfelt thanks to Pagcor under chairman Efraim Genuino for again helping us in making the Annual Awards Night possible,” said PSA president Aldrin Cardona of the Daily Tribune. To be conferred the organization’s top individual honor is world pound-for-pound fighter Manny Pacquiao, who will be the recipient of the Athlete of the Year award for the fifth time in seven years. The 30-year old Pacquiao garnered the title by virtue of his unbeaten streak a year ago, which he capped via an eighth round technical knockout of boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya. Other than the Athlete of the Year honor, the pride of General Santos City will also be enshrined into the PSA Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, reigning world flyweight champion Nonito Donaire leads 10 other personalities to be honored with a major award in the yearly affair also backed by the Villar Foundation, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Shakey’s, Accel, PBA, PBL, NCRAA, PCSO, SBP, Purefoods, Ginebra, Alaska, Sta. Lucia, Rain or Shine, Ever Bilena, Harbour Centre, Liga Pilipinas, Secretary Lito Atienza, Pharex, GAB and Mighty Sports Association. Tags: Philippine sports |
