College of Saint Benilde exacted some sort of revenge on Mapua as the Blazers won over the Cardinals, 1-0, to kick off the NCAA football tournament Friday at the Philippine Sports Commission pitch. The win was some sort of a payback for the Blazers after suffering from a 1-0 loss to the Cardinals last year, a loss that prevented Taft-based squad from entering the finals against six-time champion San Beda. Jan Phillip Dalaota scored the lone goal in the 77th minute. Meanwhile, a pair of routs occurred in the two juniors matches as defending champion La Salle-Greenhills coasted to a 10-0 romp of Mapua while San Beda made short work of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 19-0. Alfonso Que started the onslaught for the Baby Blazers with a goal in the 12th minute then followed this up with two more in the 50th and 52nd minutes to complete the hat trick. Teammate Ian Miguel Garcia duplicated that feat by scoring the final three goals of the match in the 65th, 78th, and 87th minutes. In the San Beda-Letran game, Theodore Tugcay and Renzi Garcia had four goals each to lead the Taytay-based crew against the Squires. Tugcay hit the back of the net in the eighth, 28th, 35th, and 47th minutes as Garcia scored in the 14th, 45th, 60th, and 86th. The NCAA still has four events left in its calendar before closing season 84. Lawn tennis opens on January 25 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts, table tennis on January 31 and athletics on February 24, 25, and 27 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex. Beach volleyball competition will be played at Island Cove in Cavite and is set on January 30 and 31 and February 1, 13, 14, and 15. |
