University of the East shocked last season’s runner-up Ateneo, 2-1, to register an opening-day upset in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 71 men’s football tournament on Sunday at the Ateneo field.Frank Mabasa’s goal in the 87th minute fashioned out the Red Warriors’ stunner over the Blue Eagles, who won three straight crowns from 2004 to 2006. Mabasa got a short pass from Mark Madrona and booted the ball from 15 yards out and eluded Ateneo goalkeeper Rufino Mantos. The Red Warriors got a lucky break when Miguel Tuazon’s back pass got through Mantos for an own goal in the 48th. But the Blue Eagles appeared on their way to salvage a draw when Juan Siojo scored from inside the penalty box off a pass by Derrick Catalan in the 60th minute. The Blue Eagles, however, faltered, allowing Mabasa the winner late in the game. In other men’s matches, University of the Philippines (UP) beat Season 69 champion University of Santo Tomas (UST), 1-0. Jose Adonis Santos, the league’s Best Scorer two seasons ago, provided the game’s only goal in the 74th minute.
