Caught in a do-or-die situation for the first time this season, Barangay Ginebra found a way to live another day.http://images.inquirer.net/media/sports/inquirersports/inquirersports/images/pic-01100251540080.jpg
At their best when backed against the wall, the Gin Kings on Friday night survived a mammoth performance by Dondon Hontiveros to scrape past San Miguel, 91-88, and forge a deciding Game 3 in their KFC Philippine Cup quarterfinal series at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Ronald Tubid grabbed a crucial defensive rebound and scored four of the Kings’ last six points as Ginebra survived the loss of an 18-point lead and Hontiveros’ career game to arrange a KO match tomorrow for the right to play Talk ‘N Text in the Final Four.

“We just survived to play another game,” Ginebra coach Jong Uichico told reporters later. “They (Beermen) caught up (from an 18-point deficit), and I knew that they would because of the firepower that they have.”

Hontiveros rallied the Beermen by shooting 25 of his 35 points in the final two frames to make the game close as it was.

His third three-pointer coming at the 2:04 mark gave the Beermen an 85-82 lead, but the Kings held San Miguel to just three more points the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Air21 president Lito Alvarez on Friday said that he sees no problem when his team assumes the name of Burger King starting with the Fiesta Cup on Feb. 28.

Alvarez said he can provide documents that show that Air21 franchise owner Bert Lina owns 60 percent of Burger King in the Philippines and hence.

In another development, negotiations are ongoing between Bo Perasol and Coca-Cola that will have the current Air21 mentor sitting as assistant of Kenneth Duremdes. National coach Yeng Guiao, who resigned from Red Bull recently, has been tabbed to handle Air21/Burger King.
