The defending champions stayed in top form in various UAAP competitions that kicked off over the weekend.

University of Santo Tomas looked poised to retain the men’s and women’s tennis crowns following convincing wins Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Adamson University got off to a strong start in baseball at the Rizal Memorial ballpark, while University of the Philippines also had few worries in its opening-day softball campaign last Saturday at the UST field.

UST moved within a win of sweeping the first round in men’s volleyball action, also Sunday at The Arena in San Juan City, even as Far Eastern University kept the lead in women’s action last Saturday at the FEU gym.

The UST Tigers, who swept last year’s elimination round to bag the men’s tennis title, relied on a mix of veterans and young guns to post a 4-1 victory over Ateneo de Manila University.

Rookie Miguel Narvaez scored a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Ayo Canlas, while sophomore Raymond Villarete overpowered Julian Lagman, 6-1, 6-1, in singles.

The veterans carried the fight for UST in doubles as Alexander Diego and Keane Barraquias tripped Jolo Opulencia and Miko Amoncio, 6-1, 6-3, and Wilbur Orillano and Gerald Pinili crushed Leyan Moncera and Louie Macalino, 6-1, 6-1.

Aiming for a record fourth straight crown, the Tigresses whipped the UP Lady Maroons with a similar 4-1 triumph.

Nikki Manalo coasted to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kim Guillermo and Macy Solon came up with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Joie Altiche in singles.

Last season’s MVP Romeo Jasmin Jr. led the Adamson Falcons to an 18-10 rout of De La Salle University in baseball, while UP joined the early winners by slipping past National University, 7-6.

Freshmen also starred in the Lady Maroons’ opening bid for back-to-back softball titles as Lucille Rote and Alex Zuluaga keyed their 9-2 triumph over the Ateneo Lady Eagles.

In volleyball, Adrian Pabalan scored 20 points, including 15 hits and three aces, to lift the unbeaten FEU Tamaraws to their sixth straight victory, a 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 15-9 decision over the University of the East Red Shirts.

The Lady Tams, led by Maica Morada, Cherry May Vivas and Rachel Daquis, also kept the lead at 5-1 after recovering from a set down to nip the Red Skirts, 21-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-18.
