Air21 Monday formalized its application to change the team name to Burger King for the 2009 Fiesta Conference which begins Feb. 28. Lito Alvarez, Air21’s representative to the PBA board of governors, submitted documents to league commissioner Sonny Barrios showing that Burger King is part of the Lina Group of Companies, which also owns Air21. One of the supporting documents submitted by Alvarez was Air21’s January 2002 letter to the late former commissioner Jun Bernardino, informing him of the franchise’s transfer to a holding firm, Lina Heim Corporate Services. The franchise entered the league in 2002 without a holding firm, but under Air2100 Inc. “I’m confident that we will be able to get the PBA’s nod,” Alvarez, who is also the PBA board vice chair, said. “Our papers are in order. But we will just have to go through the process.” Air21 was earlier required to show proof that owner Bert Lina meets the criteria of having 33.3 percent ownership of Burger King. Lina reportedly owns a 60 percent stake in the fast-food chain with telecommunications magnate Manny V. Pangilinan, who also owns Talk N’ Text, controlling 13 percent of stocks. Vowing to act with dispatch on the matter, Barrios said he has forwarded the documents to PBA legal counsel Melvin Mendoza, who will study whether Air21’s name change can be allowed without a league fee. PBA board chair Joaqui Trillo of Alaska is also hoping for a quick resolution of the issue. “We might finish the issue within the week,” said Trillo. “There might not be a need to vote if the (Air21) papers are in order.” Meanwhile, Red Bull manager Tony Chua may be leaving the all-pro national team as team manager in the wake of coach Yeng Guiao’s resignation from the Barako. Sources close to Chua Monday said the Red Bull manager could announce his resignation in the next few days. Chua has been in the forefront of talks with Yakult, one of the prospective sponsors of the RP team that is set to see action in the FIBA-Asia Championships in China in August. |
