Cycling) will take legal action against the Philippine Olympic Committee if the latter refuses to recognize the federation’s new set of officers to be elected on Friday. PhilCycling vice president Paquito Rivas Monday said the legitimate members of the PhilCycling board will not allow the POC to replace them with officials from another group. Rivas said the rival group, which carries the same Securities and Exchange Commission-registered name of the federation, does not enjoy the blessings of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the international federation for the sport. Led by former national cyclist Rolando Hiso, the faction held an election last month and has applied for POC recognition. “We will not allow them (other group) to take over the affairs of the PhilCycling,” said Rivas, a former national rider and two-time Tour of Luzon champion. “They are not members of the federation and they refused to get a sanction from the PhilCycling in their tournaments.” POC spokesperson Joey Romasanta said the Olympic body is not sending an observer to the Jan. 16 polls, where Tagaytay Mayor Bambol Tolentino and Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero are vying for key positions. Romasanta said the POC would form a committee headed by athletics chief Go Teng Kok and himself to determine the legitimate list of voters for both camps. PhilCycling claims to have the support of at least 100 cycling clubs nationwide while Hiso’s group said it has 40 under its wings. |
