Filipino rising star Bernabe Concepcion wrested the vacant WBC International featherweight crown with a fifth-round knockout of Kenya's Sande Otieno Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

The 20-year-old from Binangonan, Rizal won for the 16th straight time, after referee Bruce McTavish was advised by ringside physician Redentor Viernes to stop the fight during the rest period of the fifth round because of the cut above the Kenyan's left eye.

The cut was opened by a solid right straight from Concepcion midway in the third round.

The Kenyan stood his ground, but his punches hardly bothered Concepcion, whose right straights staggered Otieno several times.

"I knew from the first round that I would control the fight," Concepcion, who raised his record to 28-1-1 with 18 knockouts. said in Filipino. "I knew I could take his punches."

Concepcion's manager, Aljoe Jaro, said he hoped his ward's performance would land him a slot in one of the undercard fights of the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton showdown in Las Vegas on May 2.

"Definitely, we will accept it if they offer us a fight in one of the undercard," said Jaro.

If the fight underneath the Pacquiao-Hatton does not materialize, Jaro said his preference would be for Concepcion to fight Mexico's Juan Ruiz in the last week of March or the first week of April in Manila.

It was actually a big night for Filipino boxers as former OPBF and Philippine lightflyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro scored a sensational first-round knockout of Thailand's Roslee Sumang in their scheduled 10-rounder.

Jaro decked Sumang, a former muay thai artist, with a thunderous right hook to the face, ending the fight two minutes and 30 seconds into the opening round.

The Thai was on the canvass for almost 10 minutes, while he was checked by ringside physicians.

In the other supporting bout, Denver Cuello also made short work of Indonesian minimumweight champion Yanus Imauri.

Imauri's corner threw in the towel in the rest period of the second round, after Cuello peppered the Indonesian with solid body shots.
