This was the assessment made by Asia’s first Grandmaster (GM) Eugene Torre.
In 2007 the 15-year-old So became the youngest Filipino GM and the seventh youngest to grab the title. Torre said So’s exploits are now being noticed all over the world. “The talent and skills are already there and he has proven that,” said Torre in an interview with dzSR Sports Radio. “This year could be a test of character and nerves for him because everybody knows him already.” But Torre believes So has what it takes to take the challenge because of his attitude toward the sport. “Nakakapag-prepare at nakakapag-aral siya on his own. Marunong siya because he has chess books, chess computer softwares and database. He also has the support of his parents,” said Torre. So broke Philippine chess records by reaching a 2627 ELO rating—the highest by any Filipino—in the latest ratings report by the International Chess Federation. |
