The RP contingent, composed by around 70 student athletes from University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)-affiliated schools, also scored five silver and eight bronzes for a total of 16 medals. Tae kwon do took the lead in bringing home the bacon, racking up two golds, one silver and a bronze. One gold came courtesy of a spectacular roundhouse kick from Alexander Briones, whose Indonesian opponent really did not know what hit him. He took the heavyweight division with no contest – 5-0. "Strategy ko talagang maghintay sa kanya. Hinintay ko lang yung third round para ilabas yung skills ko dahil alam ko sa third round mauubusan din siya ng hangin," said Briones. Rey David took the longer route against his Indonesian opponent in the bantamweight division. It was a slow but sure win at 3-1. Jelyn Roxas actually won the country's first gold medal with an impressive javelin throw of 40.22 meters against her Malaysian opponent in the finals. Jelyn opened the golden gate after nearly a week of competition. The silver medals came from athletics through N. Hey (hammer), Jenny Agato (women’s 400m hurdles) and Junrey Bano (men’s 400 hurdles); swimming through Kendick Uy (100m freestyle); and tae kwon do through Jurrie Bernardino. The eight Filipino bronze winners are R. Bacay (hammer), M. Sibayan (javelin), R. Gener (pole vault), J. Togle (100m hurdles), J. Salceda (800m swimming), Enchong Dee (400m swimming), Luica Dacanay (500m backstroke) and Aphrodite Brillantes (taekwondo). There are more medals at stake in golf, shooting, athletics, tae kwon do and swimming for the Philippine team. The Asean University Games, which runs from Dec. 11 to 21, is organized by the Asean University Sports Council which is composed of the university sports associations from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam.
