In a meeting with sports writers from Manila last weekend, Puentevella said the tournament will be an ongoing event and is envisioned to help discover fresh talents from the grassroots who can be future members of the national team. "I envision our local boxing program to be able to produce boxers who will represent our country in the 2012 London Olympics since I still believe that it is in boxing where we have the best chances of winning our first Olympic gold medal," the former commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) said. The lawmaker assured participants of the 1st Golden Gloves tournament, which drew to a close last February 10 at the SM City south terminal that the tournament "will be an ongoing year-round event which will enable Bacolod boxers to compete in more tournaments." Barangay Pahanocoy and Punta Taytay finished with 6 and 4 gold medals, respectively, to emerge as the winningest teams in the grassroots competition, which started last Feb. 18, 2007 with 22 participating barangays. The event was staged in cooperation with the Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) headed by Games and Amusements Board commissioner Juan Ramon "Monju" Guanzon and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and sponsored by PAGCOR, PCSO, PLDT, Smart, Nestle Philippines, SM Supermalls, Tanduay, Globe Telecoms and Merci. |
