Philippine Cup Preview
After a successful 2004-05 season highlighted by two titles, the team’s campaign took a dip last year when the Kings finished fourth in the Fiesta Conference and sixth in the Philippine Cup.
But the diehard Ginebra supporters need not fret as management assembled a very formidable lineup that made basketball aficionados say that coach Jong Uichico’s squad should be the team to beat this season.
The addition of Billy Mamaril and Rafi Reavis did not only assure the future of the Kings but also put some speed and fear to the already dreaded frontline as the two were in the top 10 in blocks last year.
Rudy Hatfield is also making a grand return to the league after Ginebra got the rights on him in a multi-player trade in the off-season, giving the team a shot in the arm especially on defense where the Kings were seventh in the league last season, yielding 93.3 points per game.
After filling the holes in their frontline, the Kings made another bold move by signing 13-year veteran Johnny Abarrientos to be the chief backup of Jayjay Helterbrand.
But Uichico, also a newcomer to the most popular squad in the league, still downplayed their chances as he says that games are won on the court and not on paper.
Helterbrand, Eric Menk and Mark Caguioa remain as the focal points of the team’s offense and now they have the players to take charge on defense with Mamaril, Reavis, Hatfield and Abarrientos around.
