MANILA -- Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Malacañang's decision on this year’s Order of National Artists.

Pacquiao defended his friend and film director Carlo J. Caparas from critics, saying that the local comics mogul deserves to be named National Artist.

“Walang question kung siya ang napili dahil magaling naman siya, marami siyang nagawa sa ating bansa. Magaling na director. Lahat noong komiks na binabasa ko pa ay ginagawa niya,” said the Filipino boxing icon, who was himself appointed by President Arroyo as Presidential Peace Envoy.

Pacquiao made the comment after attending the baptismal of actress Vina Morales’ baby.

The boxer said he has found an affinity with the film director because they are both “for the masses.”

Caparas is among this year's National Artists whose inclusion to the list drew heavy criticisms.

A group of National Artists and their supporters on Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to stop Malacañang from awarding this year’s Order of National Artists to him and three other individuals.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao confirmed that Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger is officially out from his upcoming movie “Wapakman.”

“Pinalitan kasi hindi magkapareho ang schedule namin busy siya busy rin ako,” said Pacquiao.

The boxer said Scherzinger was replaced by Rufa Mae Quinto.
