A water sports organization will undertake a series of kayaking marathons and other activities from April 24 to 26 in various parts of the country, an official of the Sun & Sea Sports Systems, Inc. (SSSI) said Wedensday.

Sun and Sea project manager Andrea “Didi" Camara said the kayak marathons, dubbed as “The Philippine Kayaking Series 2009," will take designated routes such as the Hundred Islands adventure in Pangasinan province, the Cavite-Corregidor-Bataan tri-point course across the Manila Bay and the Cebu-Bohol channel cruise.

She said, “water sports in the Philippines – the largest archipelago in the planet next to Indonesia – have become venues to develop sportsmanship, eco-tourism and adventure travel, among others."

“Since we started the Philippines Kayaking Series in 1997, we have always placed equal importance to environmental conservation awareness and local community participation, and the promotion of the sport.

“We always work with residents and leaders of the local government units where we hold our events to ensure that conservation concerns are considered even as we offer economic opportunities to local communities," Camara said.

“For the 2009 kayaking event, exciting prizes such as kayaks, airline tickets, gift certificates, gift packs and trophies await two-man team winners in the 25-km and 5-km races," Camara said, adding that this years series offers an activity mix designed to cater to a wide range of audiences.

Sun and Sea has as its partners for the Hundred Islands event, the Department of Tourism, North Philippines Visitors Bureau, some corporate groups, such as the North Luzon Expressway and Cebu Pacific, and media organizations.

Activities of the three-day event will include photography workshop and/or kayak photo safari, free kayaking clinics, opportunities for eco-tours and several others.
