Although the country failed in its quest to win the overall title, the Philippine Team contingent to the 6th Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) games was able to match last year’s finish.
In Sunday’s closing rites at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, young athletes from Puerto Princesa and Mindanao ended up with a decent fifth and sixth place finish in the overall medal tally.
Puerto Princesa hauled five gold, five silver and eight bronze medals while Mindanao plucked four gold, seven silver and four bronze medals for an accumulated medal harvest of 33 for Team Philippines.

If she had it her way, newly appointed Philippine Sports commissioner Akiko Thomson wants elite athletes to enjoy the same “protection” during her time.
“I was very sheltered... Protected from all the politics,” Thomson said Monday in her first media interview after her appointment was announced last Thursday.
Thomson, who saw action in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympics, said she will work to strengthen the relationship among the PSC, Philippine Olympic Committee and the National Sports Association.

At 4' 11", Hidilyn Diaz is the smallest among all the Filipino athletes who will be representing the country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. But, boy, she is the strongest, pound-for-pound, among the 15-man RP contingent.
“Nagbuhat po ako ng 56 kilograms,” said Hidilyn when asked about her lifts.
The 17-year-old Zamboangeña, the first Filipino weightlifter to be named to the Olympic team since 1988, said she started competing at a young age. |

The main bulk of Team Philippines set foot here Tuesday, oozing with confidence and in high spirits three days before the 2008 Beijing Olympics formally comes off the wraps in this country of 2 billion people.
RP chef de mission Monico Puentevella led the Filipino contingent composed of 11 athletes and three top sports officials, who arrived in the bustling Chinese capital at around 11:30 a.m. following a four-hour flight from Manila via Philippine Airlines.
At the airport to meet the delegation was Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) spokesperson Joey Romasanta. |
