PSC Chairperson William “Butch” Ramirez represented the Philippine government, while Luis Arias Romero, Ambassador of Spain to the Philippines represented his Kingdom. Javier Laporta, Cultural Attache of the Spanish Embassy in Manila, together with DFA Assistant Secretary for European Affairs Rey Carandang, PSC Commissioners Ambrosio de Luna and Eric Loretizo and executive director Fr. Vic Uy, SVD, witnessed the signing of the historical bilateral agreement. The program for sports cooperation is a project proposed by Senators Jose Manuel Barquero of Spain and Edgardo Angara of the Philippines under the RP-Spain Agreement on Parliamentary Cooperation. The program underlines the common desire of establishing sports cooperation and collaboration and the maintenance of fundamental sports principles enshrined in the Olympic Charter, most especially fostering the spirit of friendship solidarity and fair play. Chairman Ramirez said that the agreement is very timely and will greatly contribute in strengthening the programs of the Philippine Sports Institute currently undergoing restructuring. “In the pursuance of our dream to produce the best athletes, we need the PSI as a solution to the problems facing Philippine Sports,” said Ramirez. “Together with the Spanish High Council for Sports, we can now look towards producing highly-qualified and competent educators, scholars and sports specialists with masters and doctorate degrees in various fields in sports and sports management.” |
