MANILA, Philippines - The first Gov. Evelio Javier International Motocross Championship fires off April 24 with 50 multi-titled Filipino and foreign riders clashing for top honors in various categories in Valderrama, Antique.

The event will be held in honor of the province’s favorite son and hero, Evelio, according to former Valderrama Mayor Ray Roquero during yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Ave.

“Antiquenos always remember my late brother as a sportsman. He was responsible for constructing the Binirayan Sports Complex which is now the site of major competitions in Western Visayas,” Javier said in a statement read by Roquero, now a PCSO director.

The event, the second leg of the FIM Asian Motocross series, features 15 categories, with specially-designed trophies and medals awarded to the top three finishers in each division.

The two-day event ending April 25 is backed by Antique Rep. Exequiel Javier, brother of the late Evelio, and Valderrama Mayor Joyce Roquero, and organized by Macky Carapiet in cooperation with the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

jose_ramirez_jr Jose “Pocholo” Ramirez Jr., long acknowledged as the “Living Legend” of Philippine car racing, died early yesterday after two years of battling cancer. He was 76.

The bearded racecar driver left behind a family of racers in sons Jose Andre (Kookie), Georges, Louie, Miguel and daughter-in-law Menchie. He has a grandson who now races regularly at the Subic International Raceway, a racetrack Ramirez himself built right after the Americans left their Subic Naval Base in the early 1990s.

Ramirez’s remains lie in estate at the Christ The King Church in Green Meadows, Quezon City. According to his son Kookie, there will only be two days of wake for their father. A private ceremony will be held before the remains are cremated on Saturday.

As a young man in the 1950s, he went to New York to work as a hotelier for Waldorf Astoria. It was in the United States that the racing bug bit him. He came back to Manila in the 1960s and met Arsenio “Dodjie” Laurel who lent him a go-kart and influenced him to take racing seriously.

With lots of awards to his name, Maico Buncio can already be considered an accomplished biker.

Owner of over 300 titles in both local and Asian motorbike tournaments, the 20-year-old speedster made his mark in the US last year, where he emerged as the first Filipino super-biker to break into the Top 30 of the tough American Motorbikers Association (AMA) Rally. He placed 24th with a time of 1:32 in the AMA Rally's last leg.

But Buncio is not one to rest on his laurels.

Go sets new drag racing All-Motor record

IN A sport dominated this season by defending champion Jonathan Tiu, promising young newcomer Christian Go of Sambo-Blanche Racing stole a piece of the limelight with his record feat in the recent 2008 San Mig Coffee Drag Racing Championship.

The 19-year-old Go, a nursing student at New England College, put his name in Philippine motorsports’ books after posting a new Drag Racing fastest All-Motor record of 10.8 seconds aboard a Black Honda EG with a B20 2.0 liter engine.

His car was prepared by Blanche Racing’s Jon Sarmiento, who incorporated the perfect specifications and modifications that ensured the car’s performance to its maximum ability.

Go achieved the feat following his runner-up finish to Tiu in the Quick 8 final showdown despite racing only for the second time this season in the event.

“To come close with a runner-up finish behind Tiu is already a big achievement for someone new in the series. And to achieve the All-Motor Philippine record is even more encouraging,” said Go. “I always keep a positive outlook. Losing doesn’t make me feel sad but instead it drives me to work harder in the coming races,” he added.

Go got his passion for speed racing from his father, San Mariano, Isabela Mayor Edgar Go, who was himself a top drag racing driver in 1981 and later competed in car rallies from 1983 to 1986.

Go’s interest in racing started at age 11 when he joined a karting clinic and started joining drag races at a young age of 17. In fact, he doesn’t just consider the sport as a hobby, but is contemplating on making it as an alternate career in the future.

At age 17, he plunged into a real drag racing competition and showed great promise when he bagged runner-up honors in the Clubman category in the 2007 San Mig Coffee Drag Racing season at the Batangas Racing Circuit.

From there, Go continued to make big strides in the sport. He bagged the Quick 8 crown in two separate events in Clark and Binalonan, Pangasinan, this year, and wound up runner-up to Tiu in the fifth leg of this year’s San Mig Coffee Drag Racing season last May.

“These achievements inspire me to go on and push harder, and I’m looking forward to better feats in future races,” said Go.
