BEIJING—The weight of an entire nation’s hopes caved in on poor little Toni Rivero, who went down fighting up to her very last kick in the 29th Olympic Games’ -67kg women’s taekwondo competitions at the Beijing University Science and Technology.
With her entire family cheering her on and Filipinos praying for a miracle back home, Rivero fought like it was the last game of her career, but still bowed to Croatian Sandra Saric, 1-4, in a first-round setback so painful, it felt like death in the family.
Her heart broken and eyes welling with tears, Rivero then walked away from the center mat, knowing that her defeat capped another futile attempt by the Philippines to end a medal drought in these games.

Cagayan de Oro’s Jonathan Polosan celebrated his debut in the international arena by entering the finals of the Prince’s Cup Muay Thai Competition at Hua Mark indoor gym Friday.
The 19-year-old Polosan made short work of brawler Kemal Abdurrahmansen of Turkey with the referee stopping the fight 15 seconds into the third round as Polosan relentlessly peppered Kemal with punches and kicks to the face and body.
This match in the 67-kg division was so one-sided that Kemal absorbed two mandatory eight counts in the first two rounds.

The Colt 45-Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) XII "Supremacy" held last July 5 at the A. Venue Events Hall in Makati City turned out a big success that organizers are planning to bring the event to the provinces.
"I can say that it was one, if not the most successful URCC we’ve had to date. The attendance was overwhelming as well as the energy of the crowd in cheering for their favorite fighter," Alvin Aguilar, who founded the URCC in the Philippines in 2002, said.
Good thing that the people behind Colt 45 shared the vision of URCC, which is to showcase Filipino mixed martial arts skills in the world.
"We would like to thank our presenter Colt 45 for sharing our vision. With their support, we see an even bigger future in Philippine mixed martial arts," Aguilar said.
