The Ateneo Blue Eagles counted on big breaks and much-needed clutch baskets to beat the mighty University of the East (UE) Warriors in overtime, 61-57, in their UAAP basketball match up at the Araneta Coliseum Thursday.
Rabeh al-Hussaini and Nonoy Baclao combined for a total of 29 points to ward off the Warriors. They also hauled down a total of 24 rebounds mostly on the defensive end, outmuscling their UE counterparts inside the paint.
Eagles Chris Tiu and Ryan Buenafe also stepped up at crucial times during the game to secure Ateneo’s win.
Tiu sank a three-pointer while they were three points down in the fourth quarter to force overtime at 50-all. Buenafe, meanwhile, scored the clutch basket that doomed the Warriors during OT.
Ateneo was comfortably ahead in the first three quarters. The Warriors, however, managed to turn the table in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Eagles scored their 10th win in 11 games. UE, on the other hand, absorbed their fifth defeat in 11 outings.
UP 73, ADU 42
