The Pumarens have been in collegiate basketball long enough to know that no team in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines should be overlooked.Even with their teams heavily favored, Franz Pumaren’s De La Salle University Green Archers and younger brother Dindo Pumaren’s University of the East Red Warriors treat their games versus struggling squads with equal importance. “We cannot take them for granted,” said Franz. “The main objective for us right now is to win as many games as possible. It’s still a long way. A lot of things can still happen.” Running second at 7-2, the Archers aim to strengthen their Final Four bid against the depleted National U Bulldogs in the 71st men’s basketball competition at 2 p.m. this Saturday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. The Warriors, at fourth place with a 5-4 slate, also hope to boost their semifinal chances versus the University of the Philippines Maroons at 4 p.m. “Many coaches have already said that this season is unpredictable; any team can win on any day,” said Dindo. “That’s why we have to be aggressive every game. The energy and effort must always be there.” The defending champion Archers, who have been drawing huge numbers from JV Casio and Rico Maierhofer, are coming off a weeklong break following an 81-61 crushing of the Maroons. But the Archers are expecting a tougher contest against the Bulldogs, whose two-game roll got snapped by the Warriors, 67-50, last week.
