Far Eastern University (FEU) big men Reil Cervantes and Aldrech Ramos showed what the Tamaraws fighting heart is all about.
Cervantes and Ramos combined for 11 of the Tamaraws' 26 fourth-quarter points to lead FEU to a pulsating 72-66 win over the Ateneo Blue Eagles in Thursday’s University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball game at the Araneta Coliseum.
The win was the Tamaraws’ fourth straight, improving their record to 5-1 and forcing a three-way logjam for the lead with their victims and the idle La Salle Green Archers.
Trailing 66-62 after a Nonoy Baclao layup, Cervantes scored on a putback off a Benedict Fernandez miss to start FEU’s end-game exploits.
The Tams inched closer on Fernandez's split free throws off a foul from Raymond Austria, then grabbed the lead on Ramos’ corner jumper with 47 seconds left in the final period, forcing Ateneo coach Norman Black to call a timeout.
When play resumed, Chris Tiu muffed an open jumper, with Adolfo grabbing the defensive board. Ryan Buenafe was forced to foul Adolfo, who sank both free throws to give FEU a 69-66 lead time down to 28 seconds.
Tiu missed another three-point try at the other end, and Jai Reyes fouled Cervantes, who iced the game for the Tamaraws with another putback and a split at the free throw line in the final 19 seconds of the match.
Cervantes finished with a team-high 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Ramos added 12 markers, five rebounds, and blocked three shots.
Fernandez, the Tamaraws’ hard-working guard contributed 12 more at the offensive end to go with his three rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot.
Mark Barroca, who kept FEU within striking distance after trailing by 10 at 56-46 early in the fourth quarter, scattered 11 points. He also had five rebounds and issued five assists.
FEU’s victory also foiled the game-long brilliance of Ateneo big man Rabeth Al-Hussaini, who had a monster game for the Eagles scoring 33 points and grabbing 20 rebounds.
Al-Hossaini’s output tied the single-season scoring of the Adamson Falcons’ Ken Bono, who also tallied 33 markers two years ago during their Final Four match against Ateneo.
