The UST Growling Tigers needed an overtime to beat the tough Adamson University (ADU) Falcons, 86-80, in Season 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament Sunday at the PhilSports Arena.

Jervy Cruz scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help UST get past ADU, which nearly beat the Tigers in the fourth quarter.

The game was close for both teams in the first half as the Falcons ended the second quarter with just a point ahead of the Tigers, 37-36. UST became the aggressor in the third quarter as it edged ADU, 54-49.

The Falcons closed the gap in the fourth by unleashing a 7-3 run against the Tigers. ADU's victory seemed at hand when they took the lead via Paul Gonzalgo’s three-pointer with over 20 seconds remaining in the game.

UST’s Mark Bautista, however, posted a three-point bomber to level the score 73-all and send the game to overtime.

It was still a close fight for both teams during overtime. But ADU lost its steam in the final two minutes, allowing UST to claim their second victory in six games.

With UST’s win, the Falcons dropped to 2-4.

Ateneo wins 5th straight

The Ateneo Blue Eagles, meanwhile, scored their fifth straight win by thumping the National University Bulldogs Sunday, 74-62.

Chris Tiu scored 17 points and Nonoy Baclao added 16 and 11 rebounds to provide Ateneo’s much needed fire power against the Bulldogs.

Ateneo’s win means NU’s fifth straight loss in the tournament.
