Jose Rizal University scored three charities and then came up with a defensive gem in the last 22 seconds to score a vengeful 76-72 win over Letran and grab the solo lead in the NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Though Jay-R Bulangis made only one of two free throws off a foul by Kojak Melegrito, it was enough to give the Heavy Bombers a breather as they took a 74-72 lead in a game marked by several twists and turns.

But the deciding play came on the defensive end when the Heavy Bombers ganged up on Letran top gunner RJ Jazul who failed to pass the ball in time and was subsequently slapped a five-second violation.

That led to two more free throws for Mark Cagoco that sealed JRU’s eight straight win – the longest by the team in years and for any team this year.

The dribblers from Mandaluyong dropped their first two games but they won their next eight games to register a record of sort.

"We were lost in the first half. We found ourselves in the second half," said JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia. "God is good, He gave us the chance to win this time."

"Talagang breaks of the game (and) crucial stops," he added.

The Knights slipped to 7-2.

Earlier, Philippine Christian University toppled College of Saint Benilde, 63-47, for its second win in 10 outings.

The Dolphins exploded an 11-3 bomb, capped by a George Allen three-pointer, midway in the third period to break away from a tight contest and take a 42-29 lead, three minutes into the third quarter.

The Dolphins went on to extend their lead to as much as 20 points twice, the last time at 61-41, 2:43 left before coasting along for the win.
