DEFENDING champion San Beda doesn’t want to be left behind.
Not at this juncture when the entire season hangs in the balance.
Today, the Lions take on the Cardinals of Mapua as they shoot for a tie for second place with the Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers in the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Carrying a 6-2 mark, the Lions are just half a game behind the Bombers and a win over the Cardinals in their 4 p.m. encounter will put them into a tie with the Mandaluyong-based dribblers.
The Red Lions picked up their sixth win after turning back the Philippine Christian University Dolphins, 72-68, last Monday.
San Sebastian battles University of Perpetual Help Dalta System at 2 p.m.
The Stags have a 5-4 record after they won over the Cardinals, 64-62, last Friday. They can boost their chances with a win over the struggling Altas.
Nigerian slotman Sam Ekwe, who’s been averaging 23.5 points and 17.5 rebounds in the past two games, is expected to help propel San Beda to its third consecutive triumph.
“We’ll be facing a team which regularly uses the zone. We’ll have to expect a lot of this from them. And we’ll have to come up with a better performance,” said Red Lions coach Frankie Lim.
Meanwhile, Jose Rizal University guard John Wilson was spared of a suspension but was given a strong reprimand by the NCAA for his physical play against College of Saint Benilde forward Archie David in their game last Monday. Peter Atencio
