Jose Rizal University shoots for win No. 7 even as back-to-back defending champion San Beda College hopes to shake off the rust from an 11-day rest on Monday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
The JRU Heavy Bombers, the hottest squad in the league with six straight victories, tangle with the College of St. Benilde Blazers at 2 p.m. hoping to firm up their hold of second place.
The Red Lions, who are running third, resume their bumpy ride to a third straight crown when they collide against the Philippine Christian University Dolphins at 4 p.m.
The Bombers pulled off a scrambling 51-48 decision over the University of Perpetual Altas last Friday and coach Ariel Vanguardia said it showed how his boys responded under pressure.
“This is the longest streak I’ve been through since I took over,” said Vanguardia who took the coaching reins two years ago. “But we don’t want to pressure ourselves too much and just take it a game at a time.”
Vanguardia, who once served as Blazers assistant coach, said he is aware of St. Benilde’s capability.
“One thing St. Benilde has is pride and the Blazers will play with a lot of it I’m sure,” he added.
The Red Lions are the heavy favorites against the Dolphins, who two years ago gave them a scare before hacking out a 2-1 triumph in the playoffs for the 2006 championship.
“Our main goal in the second round is to be more aggressive, we’re looking forward to a better round,” said SBC coach Frankie Lim.
As usual, the Red Lions will again rely on a deeper roster spearheaded by Nigerian Sam Ekwe, Ogie Menor and Pong Escobal.
The three have been consistently delivering the goods for the Red Lions, who have so far been one of the teams to beat this season.
Beau Belga will lead the PCU charge.
