In the wake of a two-game losing slide and bereft of the man that single-handedly carried them the last time they were pushed to the limit by the team they were facing, the Letran College Knights were in search of heroes from among their ranks.

Enter Reymar Gutilban.

Stepping up big in the absence of RJ Jazul, Gutilban fueled the Knights’ early and late surge for a gritty 74-66 triumph over University of Perpetual Help Monday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

Jose Rizal University scored three charities and then came up with a defensive gem in the last 22 seconds to score a vengeful 76-72 win over Letran and grab the solo lead in the NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Though Jay-R Bulangis made only one of two free throws off a foul by Kojak Melegrito, it was enough to give the Heavy Bombers a breather as they took a 74-72 lead in a game marked by several twists and turns.

But the deciding play came on the defensive end when the Heavy Bombers ganged up on Letran top gunner RJ Jazul who failed to pass the ball in time and was subsequently slapped a five-second violation.

DEFENDING champion San Beda doesn’t want to be left behind.

Not at this juncture when the entire season hangs in the balance.

Today, the Lions take on the Cardinals of Mapua as they shoot for a tie for second place with the Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers in the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Carrying a 6-2 mark, the Lions are just half a game behind the Bombers and a win over the Cardinals in their 4 p.m. encounter will put them into a tie with the Mandaluyong-based dribblers.
