PROMISING weightlifter Heidilyn Diaz will spend her adolescent years away from home.
As part of her preparation for the London Olympics in 2012, the 16-year-old from Zamboanga will stay in China to complete a four-year training program designed by her Chinese coach and approved by the Weightlifting Association of the Philippines under its president, Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella.
Philippine Sports Commission chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez yesterday announced that the government sports body is set to approve the four-year training plan for Diaz in China .
“Malaki ang potential ng bata. At her age, malaki ang tyansa niyang mag-improve kung mabibigyan nang sapat na atensyon at suporta. The PSC Board has already approved the program submitted by the weightlifting association,” said Ramirez in teleconference at the PSC Olympics media center.
Diaz is the country’s lone representative in the weightlifting event in the ongoing Beijing Olympics. She finished 11th in the field of 30 in the clean and jerk category, considered a decent finish for an Olympic first-timer.
“Aside from Diaz, we’re still looking at two young girls na puwedeng makasama niya sa China, para hindi naman siya malungkot doon,” said Ramirez. Edwin Rollon
