BEIJING—It was one of amateur boxing’s darkest nights and Philippine Sports Commission chair William “Butch” Ramirez, delegation chief of mission Rep. Monico Puentevella and Philippine Olympic Committee secretary-general Steve Hontiveros were there to share Harry Tañamor’s grief.A teary-eyed Ramirez, whose agency helped fund the boxer’s pre-Olympic stints overseas, stared at the momentarily vacant ring, perhaps waiting for the bell to signal a phantom fifth round. Puentevella put his face on his hands and Hontiveros looked devastated. The three RP delegation officials said they didn’t see it coming. They all thought the Ghanaian Manyo Plange was easy picking for Tañamor. The RP pug’s defeat Wednesday night was easily the most stunning for the embattled national contingent here.
