A businessman and former sports official has pledged another P1 million to the winner of the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal, boosting the champion’s potential bonanza to P9.5 million, according to officials of the Philippine Olympic Committee.
POC treasurer and wushu president Julian Camacho Thursday said former Philippine Wushu Federation and No Fear sports apparel co-owner Jimmy Ong is also donating P1 million to the gold medalist in the Beijing Olympics.
Aside from the P5 million assured by the government through the Philippine Sports Commission and Republic Act 9064, taipan Lucio Tan, computer giant Microsoft Philippines, and newly crowned WBC lightweight champ Manny Pacquiao, who will also serve as the RP Olympic delegation flag bearer, have also offered P1 million each to the country’s first Olympic champion.
The Philippine Sportswriters Association, in partnership with Brickroad Gym and Aspen Spa for My Olympic Dream Project, also put up a P500,000 reward for the gold medalist.
“There are a few who called up the POC office to express their intention to donate for the gold medal winner,” said POC spokesman Joey Romasanta. “We are working out ways to facilitate all these pledges.”
Camacho and Romasanta made it clear that the windfall awaits only the gold medalist and not for those who will win silver or bronze.
The country last won a medal in the Olympics 12 years ago in Atlanta when Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco bagged silver in boxing.
