The country’s best golfers are set to slug it out for the top prize of the P4.630 million-Country Club Invitational which is due to kick off on January 22 in Laguna.

The top 36 players from the 2008 Philippine Golf Tour’s (PGT) Order of Merit (OOM) are competing for the P1.350 million top purse of what has become the country’s golfing major outside the Philippine Open.

Leading the pack is OOM header Angelo Que who expects a heavy challenge from No. 2 Juvic Pagunsan.

Pagunsan beat Que by a whopping 11-stroke margin last year in what could be the most lopsided triumph in a tournament.

Others raring to challenge the defending champion, include Tony Lascuna, Mars Pucay, Rey Pagunsan, Jay Bayron, Marvin Dumandan, Elmer Salvador, Benjie Magada and Robert Pactolerin.

The seventh staging of the event will be held in honor of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) founder Enrique “Don Pocholo” Razon Sr., himself an avid golfer.

Meanwhile, an 18-hole pro-am event will be staged on January 21 as a prelude to the championship, with a distinguished list of invited guests from the business sector and other fields participating.

The event also serves as the kickoff leg of the 2009 PGT, which will feature the country’s top amateur from the ICTSI golf stable, led by Ferdie Aunzo, Rufino Bayron and Tonton Asistio.

The second placer will receive P685,000 while the third, fourth and fifth finishers will get P440,000, P315,000 and P225,000, respectively.
