Among the campaigners are Juvic Pagunsan, Tony Lascuna, Angelo Que, Artemio Murakami, and Mars Pucay. So far, only Que has had a successful run in the tour. The 30-year-old star triumphed in the Philippine Open last April, followed by another win at the ICTSI-Mount Malarayat Championship leg of the Mercedes-Benz Tour. And earlier this month, he participated but didn’t make the cut in the prestigious British Open Championship. But other than Que, the others have been grounded for most part of the first half. Pagunsan, who won the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational last year, almost won the Singha Thailand PGA Championship title. He lost steam in the final round and finished three strokes behind Korean Mo Joong-Kyung. He pocketed $32,550 (P1.4-million). "There are at least 16 tournaments left in the schedule and that’s good for us," Pagusan said. "The opportunity is not limited, but it would be better if any of us [Filipinos] start winning right away." Pagunsan is one of the teaching pros of the ICTSI golf program. Murakami, a Frankie Miñoza protégé, enjoyed a wonderful debut at the US Open. But he too has not been striking the ball well enough. In fact, his game has gone down considerably after getting through the US Open qualifier in Japan. Lascuna and Pucay were both inconsistent with their games but remain optimistic of their chances. "If the event is 72 holes, we need to play excellent for 72 holes. It can’t be 18, 36, or 54," echoed Lascuna and Pucay. |
