The eight-year-old Nicomedes got the huge reward after playing 108 holes in two different venues in the Philippines to qualify for the San Diego tournament. The qualifying tour was held at the Riviera Sports Club in Silang, Cavite and Royale Tagaytay in Tagaytay City where Nicomedes placed in the top three out of 15 entries in the seven to eight years old category. In October last year, Nicomedes won his first trophy as overall champion in Aguinaldo Golf Club. Starting his competitive golf game at age 6, Nicomedes has always been in the top five of all the tournaments he joined. Nicomedes’ parents, Dennis and Paola Angela, said Paolo went through the rigors of training for the prestigious competitions in the US. "We started preparing for the Junior World qualifying in April of 2007. Training starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. It includes two hours of pitching and putting and two hours for nine holes. He then goes to school from 12:45 until 5 p.m," Angela recalled. The junior golfer returns to the driving range after school to hit at least 300 balls as part of his practice routine. Despite his busy schedule, Nicomedes is still able to maintain an average grade of 85.76. |
