Maristella Torres is a two-time SEAG long jump champion as she won golds with leaps of 6.47 and 6.31 meters.
She blossomed as the country’s next Elma Muros-Posadas when she scored a near-sweep of the three-leg 2005 Asian Grand Prix, winning the Indonesian leg (6.46 meters) and the Thailand edition (6.55) and placing second in Singapore (6.45).
She even beat some of Asia’s top athletes, including Anju Bobby George of India, China’s Zhang Lan, Zhong Mei, Anastasiya Juravleva of Uzbekistan and Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan.
“Medyo malayo ‘yung distance ko ngayon du’n sa nagawa ko sa 2008 Asian Grand Prix dahil sa matagal akong nabakante due to injury. Pero sa ngayon, healthy na ako at sa tingin ko naman kaya kong malagpasan ‘yung dati kong personal best na 6.47 meters.”
Torres improved her distance to 6.50, still way ahead of her personal best of 6.63 meters, when she won a silver in the Korean Open three years ago, but good enough to make her competitive again.
“Experience and exposure, maganda ang ibinigay sa amin sa US, kaya kung hindi maa-aggravate ‘yung injury ko during the Olympics, sa tingin ko mai-improve ko pa ‘yung distance ko,” said Torres, a protégé of Muros, long considered as the SEA region’s iron lady.
