Filipino chess prodigy Wesley So scored two straight wins in the 71st Corus Chess Tournament to grab solo lead after the six rounds of play. He will face a female grandmaster from India for his next match.SportsNews.ph reported that the Filipino grandmaster humbled Mexican GM Manuel Leon Hoyos in the sixth round after defeating GM Eduardo Iturrizaga of Venezuela in the fifth. The 15-year-old So now has 4.5 points on three wins and three draws, overtaking GM Tiger Hillarp Persson of Sweden and No. 13 seed IM Manuel Bosboom of the Netherlands by half a point. The wins were a big boost for the Bacoor-based GM after scoring three draws against lower-rated opponents -- seventh seed GM Oleg Romanishin of Ukraine in the second round, No. 11 seed FM Anish Giri of Russia in the third round and fourth seed GM Abhijeet Gupta of India in the fourth round. Next up for So is No. 10 seed Indian WGM Dronavalli Harika, the only female player in the 14-player, category-11 tournament. |
